FAQ

Where do I wear AMPY?

Wear AMPY wherever you want! An up and down motion works best to maximize energy production, and make sure the AMPY logo is facing the right way up when you wear it. Use the accessories to strap AMPY below your knee for cycling, on your arm or leg while running, or clipped to waist when you walk.

What kind of movements can charge AMPY?

AMPY is great at capturing the energy from walking, running, cycling, and other human motion. The vibrations from a moving car are typically too weak to significantly charge AMPY.

How do I know AMPY is working?

The easiest way to see if your AMPY MOVE device is working is by holding down the right button and shaking the unit up and down. A blue LED should flash indicating that AMPY is generating power. Another way to check is by charging up AMPY from motion, then charging your phone. Take AMPY on a run or long walk, then plug in your electronic device using the USB port. If your device is charging, then AMPY is working!

AMPY can charge anything that charges from USB 2.0 or USB 3.0. These include micro-USB, Apple Lightning, and other proprietary charging adapters.

What is the capacity of the battery inside AMPY?

AMPY contains a 1800 mAh battery, giving you enough juice to get through the day while keeping AMPY light and small.

Why isn't my AMPY charging as much as I thought it would?

There are a few ways to ensure you are getting the most charge out. Make sure that AMPY is vertical with the AMPY logo on top and USB port on the bottom. AMPY works best on the waist or back of the arm when running, and on the leg just below the knee when cycling. Running generates the most energy, followed by cycling, then walking. My AMPY MOVE is dead and isn't charging from motion. Is something wrong?

There are a couple of easy checks to see if your unit is working. First, press down the right button and shake the device and a blue LED should flash. Second, plug AMPY into your phone, then shake the device with it plugged in. Your phone should charge intermittently. If both of these tests work, your AMPY is working! However, when you drain your AMPY completely, you can undercharge the battery. If this happens you need to do a high-movement activity (running, or shaking the device) or charge briefly from the wall for a minute or two. From there, slower movements like walking and cycling will charge the device easier. We recommend not draining AMPY completely, as with all batteries, this can reduce it's lifetime. The best way to use the device is to keep it charged to some level through the wall, charge your phone and use the app to prevent overcharging, and top up from motion.

I have been moving with AMPY, but the set of four status LEDs isn't changing.

The set of LEDs will only increase over very long periods of time or activity. During typical daily activities and workouts, the LEDs will not increase in level because the battery inside of AMPY is much larger than the amount of energy generated. However, all of the energy you generate is still stored in the device, even if the LEDs do not light up.

Does AMPY MOVE communicate with my phone through the AMPY+ app?

The AMPY+ app is a standalone app and does not communicate with your AMPY MOVE. AMPY MOVE does not have bluetooth transmission capabilities. The AMPY+ app is able to gain all of the information it needs from two sources: (1) the sensors in your phone and (2) your input of the number of LEDs that light up on your device.

Is AMPY MOVE supposed to make noise when I shake it?

The inductors inside of AMPY MOVE will produce some noise when you move the device. The noise should be quietest when AMPY is oriented with the logo right-side up. The inductors inside of AMPY will have some amount of friction at first that will reduce over time as you use the device.

Does AMPY MOVE contain magnets? Are they safe?

The inductors inside of AMPY MOVE do contain magnets. These magnets can be a concern for pacemakers. However, laptops, phones, credit cards and other devices should function OK even when AMPY MOVE is placed close to them. AMPY MOVE can demagnetize hotel key cards and parking cards if placed close to them.

Why does AMPY+ need my location?

AMPY+ uses your location to improve your Battery Life Forecast. However, AMPY+ can still function without location access. If your battery is draining quickly or you would like to turn off location permissions, you can go to Settings > AMPY+ > Location and select Never.

Go to Settings > Privacy > Motion and Fitness and enable Fitness Tracking and access for Health and AMPY+. Then, go to the Health app > Sources > AMPY+ and enable access for Steps. On Android phones, AMPY+ needs access to your Google Fit data. Ensure that Google Fit is installed, then open AMPY+ and grant access to your account. You may need to check your Account Sync settings to ensure Google Fit data is being synced.

I moved a lot today but did not generate very much energy. Why not?

In order to have your movement recorded, you must carry your phone or a fitness tracker with you as you move. The amount of battery life generated depends both on how much you move and how you use your phone. If you move a lot on a certain day and also use your phone more than normal, you may generate less battery life that day than when you use your phone less.

My battery life prediction does not seem accurate. Why not?

AMPY+ learns your smartphone usage habits over the course of the first few days. As it learns more, your battery life prediction improves. However, if you do not think the predictions are accurate, you can try closing the app and reopening it.

Does AMPY MOVE communicate with my phone through the AMPY+ app?

The AMPY+ app is a standalone app and does not communicate with your AMPY MOVE. AMPY MOVE does not have bluetooth transmission capabilities.
